The powerhouse combo of Director J.J. Abrams and Producer Steven Spielberg struck paydirt. "Super 8" was number one at the box office. The movie described as a next generation "E.T." drew an estimated $37.0 million and is expected to be a definite summer movie hit. Here's the trailer just in case you haven't seen it.
"X-Men: The First Class" was number two at the box office with an estimated $25.0 million. Damon Lindelof writer and producer of "Lost" and "Star Trek" praised the movie via Twitter, especially McAvoy and Fassbender for their performances. He made some less than stellar comments regarding "Mad Men" actress January Jones performance as Emma Frost which he later backtracked, but otherwise loved the movie.
Last week, the "Green Lantern: Emerald Knights" animated movie was released on DVD and Blu-ray and revealed once again the brilliance of Warner animation studio. They crafted a series of vignettes that tie into the main story and reveal the origins of the Green Lantern Corps and tells their diverse stories. It definitely isn't required viewing to enjoy or understand the soon to be released live action "Green Lantern" movie, however, I highly recommend it.
I remember reading that the Warner animation next project following the upcoming "Batman: Year One" is tentatively titled "Justice League: Doom", written by the late Dwayne McDuffie and based on the "Justice League: Babel" comics story. The story, for those who aren't familiar with it, involves Batman's nemesis Ra's Al Ghul taking on the Justice League by using and completely manipulating The Batman. A great comic story written by Mark Waid and illustrated by Howard Porter. I highly recommend reading the complete original story in collected in trade paperback.
Cartoon Network has signed an agreement with producer Joel Silver and Silver Pictures to develop a live action motion picture for "Ben10". The property was created by Man of Action: Joe Casey, Joe Kelly, Duncan Rouleau, and Steven Seagle. The animated series premiered in January 2006 and spun off into "Ben 10: Alien Force" in 2008 and current seen as "Ben 10: Ultimate Alien". Cartoon Network has previously aired two live-action movies featuring the character. "In Ben 10, Cartoon Network has built a property that is loved across the world," Silver said. "It has a fun premise with a great leading character that lends itself to the big screen and I am looking forward to seeing how we can take it to the next level."
Sneak peek at a trailer for four new Marvel anime series coming to G4 in July.
