Weekend Box Office - "Riddick" was number one bringing in $18.7 million, "Lee Daniels' The Butler" was number two with $8.9 million, the comedy "Instructions Not Included" debuted at number three with $8.1 million.

 

 

                                                                           

 

"Star Trek Into Darkness" is debuts today on DVD/Bluray and despite less than glowing praise from critics for the movie J.J. Abrams always manages to take on a wild ride.  Marvel's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D". premieres Tuesday, Sept. 24 on ABC. The pilot episode is directed by none other than Joss Whedon who also directed the motion picture Marvel's "The Avengers". 'Nuff said.       

 

 

                                                                          

 

Nickelodeon debuts season two of "The Legend of Korra", the very worthy successor to "Avatar: The Last Airbender" this coming Friday. 

 

 

                                                                            

 

Season two of the CW network's hit series "Arrow" debuts on October 13 and the trailer which premiered at Comic Con recaps the first season and gives a us a taste of what to expect in the upcoming season.

 

 

                                                                      

 

Weekend Box Office - "One Direction: This Is Us" was number one bringing in $17 million, "Lee Daniels' The Butler" was number two with $14.7 million, and "We're The Millers" rounded out the top three with $12.6 million. Notable mention goes to "Disney's Planes" which was the number four movie, but nonetheless a good movie to see on a holiday weekend even though it was outside the top three.

 

                                                          

                                                                                

 

 

Arriving on DVD/Bluray October 25 is the documentary "Necessary Evil: The Supervillains of DC Comics". The documentary explores what makes a great villain and how a great villain is what makes a hero great.

 

 

 

                                                                                 

 

 

 

 

One of the few movies coming out for this upcoming weekend is "Bounty Killer". The movie seems to be a indie low budget sci-fi based action movie which probably won't make the top three, but I find the premise and action in the trailer compelling. Besides, who knows, life is full of surprises. Arriving on DVD/ Bluray today is "Now You See Me". Despite a stellar cast and brilliant plot device the movie received very little love from the critics. However, the movie did well enough at the box office to earn a potential sequel. Go figure.

Warner Bros. recently announced that Ben Affleck will play Batman in the upcoming sequel to "The Man of Steel". The movie which is to be entitled "Superman/Batman" will be the first time these two legendary characters have shared the same movie screen. To say that fan response has been less than favorable is an understatement. Some of it has been downright nasty and utterly mean spirited. The backlash is due in large part to Affleck's previous portrayal of the Marvel Comics sightless superhero in "Daredevil". Given the actor recent movie roles in "The Town", "Argo", and the upcoming "Runner Runner" where he plays a villainous casino owner. I say the actor deserves the benefit of the doubt. Let's give this a wait and see. Let's remember, it's often not the actor, but the director that dictates the direction of a character's portrayal in their movie. Zach Snyder is a rock solid director, not to mention Christopher Nolan ("The Dark Knight trilogy") is the producer of this new franchise. Robert Rodriguez does it again with the sequel to his hit movie "Machete". Danny Trejo returns as the title character in "Machete Kills". All of the action and insanity that makes one of these movie's fun is present in the trailer for this movie sequel. No surprise there since the first movie started out as a faux trailer that was a part of "The Grindhouse Double Feature". This trailer features the cast in hilarious who's who scenes that ends with a jaw dropping surprise. On DVD/Bluray and also available as streaming video on Netflix, "Cabin in the Woods" is probably one of the most entertaining films in the horror genre released in recent years. Produced and co-written by Joss Whedon and Director Drew Goddard with all the combo of horror and humor that only those two could pull off so effectively. I finally had an opportunity to watch this movie and thank heaven no one ruined the surprises for me. If you have been as fortunate, see it before someone decides to spoil it for you.

In this movie, "The World's End" a group of old friends return to their hometown after twenty years to recreate a failed bar crawl that ended prematurely before their last stop, a pub called The World's End. Vin Diesel returns as the character that first launched him into superstar status in the upcoming movie "Riddick". He recently tweeted a picture of himself outside Marvel Studios where he inked a top secret deal to play an undisclosed Marvel Comics character. Odds makers and speculators favor the avenging android "The Vision". Speaking of Marvel Comics characters, the next Marvel movie "Thor :The Dark World" arrives in November. The anticipation is at a fever pitch because with each Marvel Studios release we get closer to "Avengers 2". "Percy Jackson and The Sea of Monsters" based on the second in a the series of books by Rick Riordan which brings the stories of the gods of Mount Olympus and their half-human offspring to the modern day. The focus of the stories, Percy Jackson, is the half-human son of Poseidon. "Elysium" starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster is the story of the great divide between the poor and downtrodden and the wealthy and privileged in a sci-fi action-adventure. Apparently, I jumped the gun when I indicated that "Justice League: Flashpoint Paradox" was being released last week. The actual release date is today. Imagine my surprise when I went out looking for it and found I was a week early.

 

 

                                                                               

 

"Kick Ass 2" is an example of the premise that all comic book movies are not cut from the same cloth. This movie is a classic example of how comic books have evolved past being just silly kid fare and into the realm of bona fide entertainment suitable only for grown-up taste. Caveat emptor.
